Kindness · Monday night

The Little Lost Light

"It's time for sleep, now, so close your eyes as we return to Hush Hollow."

The Meadow was going dark, and the fireflies were coming out — little and gold, blinking on and off. Fox and Pup sat in the cool grass among them.

All but one. One little firefly sat low in the grass, its light gone dim, all alone. "That one is lost," said Fox, soft and small. "It can't find its way up." "And its light is nearly out," said Pup.

So Fox cupped two careful hands around the little light, gentle as anything. Pup walked close beside, slow and quiet, so the small one would not be afraid. "This way," said Fox. "We'll help you home."

A little kindness, soft and small.

Across the Meadow they went, slow and slow, toward the others blinking gold. They did not hurry it. They did not squeeze. They only kept it warm and safe between them. Once, the little light flickered, almost out, and Pup leaned in close to keep the breeze off it. "We've got you," said Fox, soft and small. "Nearly there now." And the little light steadied, as if it knew. And little by little, the small light grew brighter — a tiny glow, then a steady one.

A little kindness, soft and small.

At the edge of the firefly-cloud, Fox opened both hands. Up went the little light, bright and glad, into all the others — home. It blinked once, just for them, before it rose.

Fox and Pup did not say anything about it. A small warmth simply stayed with them, the way it does. They lay back in the soft grass as the fireflies wheeled gold above.

A little kindness, soft and small — and the whole night a little brighter for it.

Now it is time for the goodnights.
Goodnight, little fireflies, every gold one.
Goodnight, cool grass. Goodnight, the small light, home now.
Goodnight, Fox. Goodnight, Pup.
Goodnight, Hush Hollow.

This is a house version — the very story we'd send, with our own little ones in it. Your child's version is read in the voice you choose, with their name (and a friend) woven in.

Every story opens on the same line and ends on the same goodnight round — the parts your child comes to know by heart.
